IN DEVELOPMENT: BMP-3M DRAGUN

The BMP-3M Dragun is the ultimate evolution of the BMP-3 design, which reaches back to the late 1970s and early 80s. The BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle was designed as a successor to the BMP-2, a vehicle that, although produced in great numbers, was not exactly successful when it came to combat performance.
scr1
The BMP-3 was bigger, better armored and, most importantly, better armed than the BMP-2. Armored Warfare currently has two BMP-3 types, the BMP-3 and BMP-3M. The BMP-3 is a relatively successful (if aging) design, while the BMP-3M is an upgraded variant from the late 1990s with an upgraded engine, improved side armor and an improved FCS.
The BMP-3M Dragun (Dragoon), however, is quite different from both of these vehicles, despite bearing the same designation as the latter one. It is a heavily modified BMP-3M by the producer of the original BMP-3, Kurganmashzavod (now part of the Machinery and Industrial Group N.V). It was shown to the public for the first time in September 2015 during the Russia Arms Expo. The vehicle is mostly aimed at the export market.
There are some significant changes compared to the original BMP-3 and BMP-3M. For starters, the engine was upgraded to the 816hp UTD-32 turbocharged diesel, which allows an average speed of 60 km/h (maximum achievable speed is not stated but it is believed to exceed 70 km/h). The engine was moved to the front of the vehicle, increasing frontal protection and also improving the crew compartment layout.
The crew consists of 3 men (commander, gunner and driver), but the Dragun can also carry 8 troops. The crew sits in the middle of the vehicle, between the turret and the engine. Compared to the earlier BMP-3, the troop compartment was completely overhauled and is now better protected against mine and IED explosions. Specially sealed fuel tanks were installed on the rear sides of the vehicle, near the troop compartment.
scr2
Without the turret, the vehicle weighs 15.5 tons, is approximately 6.7 meters long and 3.4 meters wide. With a standard turret, the weight increases to approximately 21 tons.
The standard version of the BMP-3M Dragun is to be armed with an unmanned turret carrying the usual BMP-3 weapons setup, a 100mm 2A70 cannon and a 2A72 30mm automatic gun (plus a 7.62mm machinegun). The vehicle can also fire guided missiles from its main gun. All weapons are automatically loaded. The weapons are controlled by an advanced FCS, focusing on the ability of the vehicle to shoot before its opponent. The commander and the gunner have unified panoramic Krechet day-night sights at their disposal. That is not the only armament variant available to potential buyers. There are in fact two more:
BM 57 unmanned turret with a 57mm automatic cannon. This should not to be mistaken for the BMP-3 Derivation, which is a different vehicle, although it does use a variant of the same turret (AU220M and BM 57 are related). BM is a Russian designation for the system, but in the west it is offered under the designation of RCWS 57.
BM 125 (RCWS 125) manned turret with a 125mm automatically loaded cannon. The 125mm variant is armed with a 125mm 2A75 automatically loaded smoothbore gun in a manned BM 125 turret, used on the 2S25 Sprut SDM-1 self-propelled anti-tank gun, an improved version of the 2S25 Sprut-SD.
Compared to the unmanned turret Dragun configuration, the gunner and the commander are moved to the turret. The 2A75 is a heavily modified 2A46M tank gun. It is capable of firing standard 2A46 125mm rounds. Its power is controlled on the light chassis by using longer recoil and hydrodynamic suspension elements. The automatic loader allows it to fire 7 rounds per second.
All these versions will be eventually introduced to Armored Warfare.

CHANGES TO COLLECTOR'S EDITIONS

Commanders!
We have carefully evaluated your Collector's Edition feedback and have reached the conclusion that the biggest bundle of the new Collector's Editions - Operation Warlord - is not the best offer we've ever made. We are dedicated to listening to your opinions and to acting upon them, which is why we have decided, effective immediately, to introduce two changes to the bundle.
scr1

OPERATION WARLORD

The Operation Warlord Collector's Edition is undergoing the following changes:
  • Increased the amount of Credits in the bundle from 12,000,000 to 15,000,000
  • Increased the amount of Premium Time in the bundle from 60 days to 90 days
Please note that the owners of the Operation Warlord Collector's Edition who purchased the bundle before this change will receive the difference (3 million Credits and 30 days of Premium Time) as a compensation on the 1st of August (Monday).

XM1 FSED AND AMX 10 RCR

Another hotly discussed topic was the bundle-only availability of the XM1 FSED Premium Main Battle Tank and AMX 10 RCR (Bastille Day version) Premium Tank Destroyer. Based on your feedback, we have decided to make both vehicles available without the rest of the bundle content. They will be available via a dedicated sales page in near future.
We hope you will enjoy these changes and will see you on the battlefield!

DEVELOPER DIGEST - PT.8

Welcome to the eighth issue of the Developer Digest series - find out more about the development of the game straight from the developers themselves!
scr1
The Loot Crates seem to be dropping less and less each day, why is that?
We haven't made any tweaks to loot rates since it went live. The system basically runs itself. During the first couple of days the sample size and population base was comparatively low. For example, it's harder to score in the top 10 percent server-wide if the theoretical pool of eligible players is 1000 vs. 100. After the statistical curve has been saturated, scores will average out and you'll end up with more stable "loot brackets". Also, keep in mind that your score modifiers your chance at getting a good loot box. You can't compare your own scores vs. the quality of loot boxes you've received because it's not a 1:1 comparison.
Aren’t the Basilisk map rewards a bit too low?
We will take a look at the rewards for this map.
What about introducing night vision?
Night vision is something we are planning to add in the future.
I don’t like the Highwall map, are there any plans to change it?
We are going to take a hard look at Highwall. Until then we may pull it from rotation in Update 0.17 once we introduce the next PvP map.
When rotating camera in third person view, vehicle models disappear if your point of view is from another tank or a wall or another hard object.
This was an intended change since we felt it was better than having the camera clip through other vehicles or your own hull.
I have a large number of low quality Insignias in my inventory, what shall I do with them?
We will eventually be adding the ability to "consume" items of a lower quality in order to get a better version of the item. So for example, you may consume 5 bronze commander insignias and get 1 silver insignia in its place. Also, in Update 0.17 we will be adding the ability to open multiple boxes at once.
Some PvE maps are offering much higher rewards than others, any plans to change that?
We are planning to overhaul the entire reward system in the near-ish future.
Any plans to change ATGMs?
It is our intention to completely rebalance ATGMs and potentially provide those who could fire on the move (albeit at lower speeds) the ability to do so.
Tell us more about the upcoming rebalances!
We are working on some major rebalances to the game across all vehicle lines. While I cannot provide the exact details at this time, they will be far reaching and have a major impact on the meta of the game. All of these changes will need to come at once in order to not skew the balance by piecemealing them out one by one. Once we are a bit closer we will release a number of articles detailing these changes.
Were there any recent changes to module design? Modules seem to be getting destroyed a lot!
Nothing changed in the latest hotfix as hotfixes are isolated patches which do not bring in outside mechanics which are not part of the patch. As always, the only recent module changes have to do with ammo racks and external fuel tanks. These came with the base Update 0.16.
Have you considered reworking viewrange mechanism into “cones” instead of “bubbles”, simulating actual crew lines of sight?
We tested this at one point and it led to players spinning their turret/camera around non-stop to always scan in every direction. At close range, the proximity spotting simulates "hearing" an enemy vehicle approaching as they are quite loud in real life.
Are there any plans for personal rewards for completing secondary objectives in PvE missions?
This is still planned and may potentially come in 0.17.
What about the SPG class? It seems neglected as of now!
While SPGs are indeed on the lower-end of the totem pole when it comes to overall vehicle balance and direction (due to a number of factors) it has not been forgotten or abandoned. We are still planning to add retrofits/equipment which will specifically boost SPG reload rates and we are looking at other areas we can improve the overall enjoyment of the class. That being said, we are taking a hard look at ALL classes right now to reevaluate how they play in AW and see what ways we can make those interactions more meaningful.
Are there any plans for PvE Matchmaker changes?
Yes, but not in near future.
Any plans to buff the Terminator vehicles?
Yes, the entire line from the BMPT to T-15.
Are there any plans to introduce new HD models and maps with 4K (Ultra-HD) texture resolution?
Certainly not this year. Our statistics show that the majority of players can’t run 4K resolution even now with existing models and textures.
Will you separate newbies from veterans on lower tiers?
This is currently not planned.
DRACO is more of a Tank Destroyer, not an AFV!
We are planning to change the DRACO class to “Tank Destroyer” in one of the upcoming patches, but this decision might change yet.
What about more Base upgrades?
We haven’t forgotten this feature, but there won’t be any changes to this feature in the upcoming updates. Currently we are dealing with more critical issues.
Will you introduce new Commanders?
We are planning to introduce new Commanders after the Commander mechanism overhaul, coming in the future.
That's it for today. See you in the next issue!

OPERATION DYNAMIC

M60pic
The M60-2000 was a General Dynamics program to improve the aging M60 Patton series by mating the M60 hull with an M1A1 Abrams turret (armed with an M256 120mm gun) to produce an affordable upgrade option for current Patton users. The development started in the 1990s and eventually led to the 120S Main Battle Tank. Turkey and Egypt were interested in upgrading their M60 stock, but they eventually opted for different upgrades.
Operation Dynamic Contents:
  • M60-2000 Tier 7 Premium MBT
  • 4,000,000 Credits
  • 30 days of Premium Time
Price: 49.99$ (44,99€)

INTRODUCING THE NEW COLLECTOR'S EDITION VEHICLES

One feature Armored Warfare's Update 0.16 is introducing is a new set of Collector's Edition vehicles, replacing those from the recently retired Emperor, Typhoon and Lightning Collector's Edition bundles – the Taifun II Tank Destroyer and the RDF/LT Light Tank.
scr1
Their replacements include two Collector's Edition-exclusive Main Battle Tanks that will be part of the new Collector's Edition bundles – the M60-2000 and the Challenger FALCON.

M60-2000

Tier: 7
Class: Main Battle Tank
Origin: United States
Purchasing a large number of brand-new Main Battle Tanks is not always an option and a lack of funding is usually the decisive factor, but some users also have large stocks of tanks that they do not want to go to waste. In such cases, retrofitting becomes a viable solution.
scr2
One of the most common Main Battle Tanks of the late 1980s and early 1990s in countries not affiliated with the Soviet Union or – later on – Russia was the M60 series. This American workhorse was the mainstay of the U.S. armored forces for several decades, surviving the ill-fated MBT-70 program before finally being replaced by the Abrams series. Many tanks of this type were sold around the world, but in the 1980s, the design started to struggle to keep up with the best Russian vehicles available.
That's when a number of modernization programs appeared. Some countries preferred to develop their own packages for the aging Pattons (such as Israel with its Magach series), while others opted to purchase upgrade kits from private companies.
scr3
The M60-2000 program was a set of specifications by General Dynamics Land Systems made for exactly this purpose. The basis of the project was to mate the M60A3 hull with an M1A1 Abrams turret, armed with its 120mm M256 gun, to increase combat value.
This approach was not unreasonable. A thick turret with the firepower of a 120mm smoothbore would significantly enhance the capabilities of the vehicle and the components were readily available, including spare parts and ammunition.
Development of an MBT based on the M60-2000 specs probably began in the mid-to-late 1990s, with early mentions of it appearing around 1998. It was marketed as a potential upgrade to M60 users. In 2000, General Dynamics Land Systems decided to build the first prototype based on the M60-2000 specs, but with a number of enhancements, designated "120S". The 120S (120mm, Survival) was essentially an upgraded M60 hull with a M1A1 turret (without the depleted uranium armor) and a 240X4 Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR). Unlike the Abrams, the vehicle retained the 1790-series diesel engine, producing 750 horsepower (although the production vehicles would be fitted with a 1200hp version to emulate the mobility of the Abrams).
scr4
The 120S was shown to several potential buyers with the main focus on Turkey and its fleet of M60S. It was unveiled in Ankara in September 2001. Initially, General Dynamics was in a rather good position – the United States was a strategic ally and hundreds of older Pattons had been donated to Turkey as a part of a military aid program.
The biggest competitor to the 120S was Israel with its Sabra program by IMI (originally based on Israel’s own Magach 7), which was eventually declared the winner thanks to an extensive economic offset program that Israel offered. A contract for the Sabra upgrades was signed in 2002, ending General Dynamics' ambitions to sell the 120S to the Turkish military. The 120S was marketed for several years afterwards but no potential buyers were interested and given the lack of any information and the disappearance of the 120S from General Dynamics offers, the project was likely cancelled around 2010.
In Armored Warfare, the M60-2000 will be a Tier 7 Main Battle Tank. Its main advantages will be a solid, well-protected turret and a 120mm M256 gun on Tier 7, making this tank a deadly opponent, especially if fighting defensively with the hull hidden behind cover.

CHALLENGER FALCON

Tier: 8
Class: Main Battle Tank
Origin: United Kingdom, Jordan
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a traditional Middle Eastern ally of Britain. It has been so since the age of the Palestinian Mandate and the creation of the Arab Legion, a competent fighting force trained and equipped by the British. Therefore, it came as no surprise when Jordan opted – as the only foreign user – to purchase Challenger 1 Main Battle Tanks and imported 392 of these vehicles in 1999.
scr5
The Jordanian Challengers were renamed Al Hussein. The main problem the vehicle had in the eyes of the Jordanian military was its gun. The 120mm L11A5 rifled cannon was an improved version of the old Chieftain gun and, while it was powerful for its time and able to knock out the T-72s used by Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, it was no longer quite the killer it used to be. Additionally, no new ammunition was being developed for it, underlining its obsolescence even more.
To compensate for this handicap, the Jordanians had to look for other solutions, including several proposals to increase Al-Hussein's firepower. One of these proposals was the FALCON turret.
scr6
The FALCON is an indigenous, low-profile manned turret developed for the Challenger 1 by the King Abdullah Design and Development Bureau. Unveiled to the public in 2003, it represents a radical departure from the original Challenger 1 concept of an extremely well-protected turret. The crew was instead moved to the hull, enhancing its safety even further. The turret is also extremely low, reducing the vehicle's silhouette size and making it hard to hit.
Another main advantage of the concept is increased firepower. The turret is armed with a 120mm L/50 Swiss RUAG Defense Systems smoothbore cannon, improving the Al-Hussein's gun performance to NATO smoothbore levels. Firing trials were complete by 2005. The gun is automatically loaded and its rate of fire is listed at up to 8 rounds per minute. It is capable of firing standard NATO 120mm ammunition. The turret is also mounted with automatic fire suppression and NBC protection systems.

Unfortunately, for unknown reasons the FALCON turret program was never pushed to the mass-production stage. An improved version called FALCON 2 was unveiled later and there was also news about the development of a FALCON 3 turret, but there are currently no known plans for FALCON production for the Al-Hussein tank platform or any other vehicle in Jordanian service.
In Armored Warfare, the Tier 8 Challenger FALCON will be a powerful Main Battle Tank with the protection of the Challenger and the firepower of a 120mm NATO smoothbore. While not as agile as other Main Battle Tanks of its tier, its armor and gun will make the Challenger FALCON more than a match for the majority of vehicles it encounters in battles.
We hope you enjoy these new Collector's Edition vehicles and we'll see you on the battlefield!
